Patrick Hughes Irish Director of Photography

About Me

Patrick Hughes is a multi-award-winning director of photography and self-shooting director based in Belfast, with extensive experience across documentary, television series, narrative films, and commercials. His work has been featured on Netflix, AMC+, BBC, ESPN, etc.

Specialising in compelling storytelling through visually engaging cinematography, I excel at capturing raw, authentic moments.  In addition to my extensive experience across various formats, I have contributed my expertise as a camera operator on high profile productions for major networks, specialising in capturing unique and challenging shots with specialised camera equipment.

With advanced technical proficiency in lighting and camera systems, Patrick regularly operates Arri Alexa, Sony FX6, and FX9, cameras. He approaches each project collaboratively, closely aligning with directors and producers to realise their creative vision through impactful, story-driven visuals.

Patrick’s production setup includes (among other camera/lens packages) an Arri Alexa Mini camera package with DZOFILM Vespid Prime Lenses, alongside a fully-equipped 1-ton lighting/camera van, ideal for agile, high-quality production across the UK, Ireland, and Europe.
You can check out the various camera packages and view the full kit list here on the kit page

I have an in-depth technical understanding of lighting and how to use light creatively to enhance the narrative, create depth, and invoke a specific emotional response from the audience. I am passionate about collaborating with directors, helping to transform their visions into impactful visuals.  As a cinematographer, my mission is to visually elevate that story, not just through lighting or composition, but by understanding the deeper layers of the narrative and characters that drive it.

I draw inspiration from filmmakers who dare to push boundaries and tell stories that feel raw and visceral.  Whether I’m working on a documentary or a narrative film, I seek to bring out the heart of each story, creating visuals that leave a lasting impression and connect with the audience on a deep, emotional level.
